Chapter 11

Feb 20th approx.

*yes just got home from my run, how are you?*

A minute later my phone rings.  I look that its Jon and smile, “Hey Jon, you not texting is confusing me.”

“Sorry babe but I just got back into Chicago and I was hoping I could steal you and go out for dinner with you. I’ve missed you.”

I look down at what I’m wearing and cringe, I’m just in yoga pants and a sweatshirt.

“I need about an hour I just got done running.” I knew I’d already showered but I have to straighten my hair again because I washed it in the shower.

“Ok babe I’m still on the plane we haven’t even gotten to a gate yet so that should work. I’ll check into the hotel before I come get you.” He was so happy she said yes he just wanted to kiss her.  Hopefully when he told her that he was back in Chicago to live she’d give him a kiss or a few.  That body of hers was something he couldn’t wait to get familiar with.  Hopefully now that he was back to Chicago he’d have the time to do that.

While Jon gets off the plane and starts to get through the city to his hotel. He has his driver stop at a 7/11 so he can pick up water and condoms, just in case he remembers I told him no glove no love.  He can’t believe he’s forced back to wearing condoms after 30 yrs.  She better be worth it he thought as he got back in the car.

I ran into the bathroom and plugged in the ceramic hair straightener before running to the bedroom to find an outfit.  “Damn it” only an hour wasn’t going to leave me much time to get my hair straight.   I realize that when I met him I had my hair straight so now I feel like I need to keep it straight until I let him know that’s not my real hair type.  I find the perfect outfit for a Surprise Date Night.  After doing that I run back into the bathroom and start on my hair. Luckily for me it decides to cooperate and its straight and looking sleek in 35 minutes.  I get a big curling iron out and plug that in after unplugging the flat iron.  I put some light makeup on with some decent eyeliner and then run into the bedroom still with 20 minutes to spare. I pull on some cute pair of satiny panties and a matching bra, then I put on the outfit I had picked out before walking back into the bathroom to put a few loose curls in my hair. Unplugging the curling iron I return to the bedroom for deodorant and some perfume.  I slide my feet into the heals and grab my brown purse to change my items to.  Just as I get the last thing put in my purse the doorman rings up to advise me that I have a guest.  I tell him to allow him to the lobby I’m just jumping into the elevator. Perfect timing.

“Sir please come in and wait here in the lobby, the tenant is on her way down.”
Jon moves to a chair in the lobby to wait still wondering why he can’t see my place.  Regardless of why, he finds it a bit quirky and he’ll have to ask me about it soon.  He stands up as soon as he see’s me come off the elevator.  “Wow honey you are a site for sore eyes.” He walks over and gives me a hug.  I smile at his touch, he looks and smells amazing.  “Hi Jon, how’s Jesse doing?”
He smiled at my question. “Thanks for asking honey,  he’s fine, surgery and physical therapy are all complete and he’s back to school.” He took my hand and lead me outside to a car.  When we get inside he wants to kiss me so damn bad but he’s only kissed me once and that was month’s ago so he has to behave himself.

“So have you ever been to the Sweetwater Tavern and Grille?” He asked.

“NO I haven’t actually but I hear its great.”

“Good because that’s where we’re going tonight. My driver says its fantastic. Casual but yet softly lit so we can talk and not get noticed hopefully. So how’s the job? What time do you have to be in tomorrow?” He asked nervously.

I smile and tell him about my job so far and that I chose 830 to be in to try to avoid a little of the rush hour commute.  I also tell him I’m a little bummed because the dress code is so relaxed, I have tons of business clothes but I could walk in like I’m dressed now and it would be perfectly fine.

“Think of how much you stand out then dressing all hot because let me tell you, you look amazing babe.” He smiled and gave my hand a squeeze.  We get to the restaurant and immediately are seated off to a table by ourselves.

“Jon did you do something naughty? They put us in a corner.” I laugh.

“NO I’m completely innocent I thought it was because of you we were in the corner.” He smiled.

“I’m not sure if I believe you’re completely innocent, you’ve got a glint in your eye.” I smile back at him.

Once seated he told me, “I have a glint in my eye because I’m out to dinner with you.  Thank you for joining me on such short notice.”

“I’ve missed you so thank you for inviting me.  And thank you for the flowers that really made me smile today.”

“Good. I wonder if my other news will make you smile.”

I put my glass of water down, “And what’s that?”

Jon took my hand and smiled, “I’m back to live here again not just a visit this time.”

“And where are you going to live?” I ask him smiling that he’s staying.

“From that answer I bet not with you.” He laughed.  “No I’m going to look around and buy a place, even when the band is working, I’m in Chicago enough that it would pay off.  Do you own or rent your place?”

“I rent this place and own my WI house.”

That night goes so well that we have 3 more dates in the next 2 weeks, all of which I’m still wearing my hair straight scared that he’ll reject the unruly curls.   The following Saturday we decide to go running and my alarm doesn’t go off so when my doorman calls me to tell me Jon’s there I don’t have time to straighten my hair.  I run my hands through it and pull it back into a ponytail and hope for the best.

Once I see him downstairs he looks at me, “Ah you’ve been hiding your curls from me.” He smiles before kissing me.  Kissing Jon I do have to say is one of my all time favorite past times.  But because we’re supposed to be working out I can’t spend my morning doing that. “Hey honey, sorry I literally woke up like when he called you up. My alarm must be on strike.  Yes curls are the real me.”

“I love it, curly hair says play with me it won’t matter I’m not prissy.” He smirked.  I smile at that and we hand Jon’s gym bag to the doorman to hold until we come back.  He obviously brought a change of clothes so we can do something after. I had gone out with some friends from my past life the night before and tied one on, this workout is much needed.

We take off towards Millenium Park and cross it to head to the lake.  I love being able to run now and not hurt nearly as bad.  My knees still don’t enjoy it but having lost the extra weight it’s getting easier and easier to do this every other day.

We don’t go very far, I’ve told Jon I’m only up to 4 miles and I’m not as fast as he probably is so if he wants to continue he can.  He tells me of course that he doesn’t want to run without me, he goes every day of the week so when he runs with me he can run at my speed and distance.  Once we get back to my place I don’t stop him from coming upstairs to my place finally.

“So all I had to do to get an invite to your home is go for a run with you?” He jokes.

“Nope you had to prove your worth and quite honestly you’ve been around a while in my life.  Almost 6 months total.”

“Yeah but that doesn’t really count because I was in Jersey so lets say a good month at least.”

“OK yes, and in that month you haven’t scared me by being psycho or stalkerish so I think its ok to let you see where I live now.”

“Good because the kissing I want to do to you shouldn’t be done in public.” He pulls me close kissing me deep but patting me on the ass.  I enjoy that and melt into him.  After massaging my mouth with his tongue he pulls back, licking over my bottom lip.  “Ok sexy, where can I shower, preferably a cold one.”

I laughed, “Yeah there’s a 2nd bathroom right there.”  I pointed to the bathroom and walked towards mine.  It doesn’t take either of us very long to shower and change, for me its nice because all I have to do is wash my hair and put a little product in it and I’m ready.  Its nice to not have to straighten it first.

After the run I walk out dressed casually in jeans, a tan sweater and a white tank underneath. My feet are in wedge style shoes but if we’re going to stay at my place they’ll be coming off shortly.  Once I walk into the living room I see Jon standing near the windows so I walk over to him and wrap my arms around him from behind.  “You like the view Jon?” I ask.

He turns around and wraps his arms around me tightly.  “Yeah now I do.” Then he hooks his fingers together on the small of my back. “You know this is about as casual of clothes I’ve ever seen you in except for running.  Do you not do a t-shirt and jeans?”

“Not unless its a Jovi shirt.” I smirk at him.

“Hey that might be a little awkward kissing someone that’s wearing my face on her chest.”

I smile at him, “you’ll be happy to know most of my Bon Jovi shirts don’t have your face on them.  Most of mine are the ones with the tour dates on the back so they have the logo or the heart and dagger on them.”

“Well thats good I guess, do you not like my face?” He asked.

“Nice Jonny but yes I love your face just not on my shirts, I get the shirts cos I liked the show and the band does the show not just you.”

“Thank you.” He kissed me gently.

“For what?”

“For knowing the difference.  You’d be surprised how many people meet me and call me Bon Jovi like I’m in the whole band.”

“No you’re just the focal point, I do have to ask though, this is something I’ve wanted to know since it all went down, can I ask you one work thing and then drop it?”

“Babe you’re my girlfriend, it gives you pretty much free reign to ask me anything.”

Chapter 10

The day I start my new job at GroupOn it surprises me at how organized and thought out the training is.  I walk in the front door and I’m greeted by Kal, the COO of the company.  He welcomes me to the company and brings me upstairs to HR, I had interviewed with him last so I wasn’t sure if he was my boss or not. I ask him that and he smiles, “Pretty much I’m most everyone’s boss but no your direct supervisor is Rich but he’s out today on a family emergency so he asked me to make sure you got settled.”

“Oh I hope everything’s ok.”

“Me too, he said he’d be in tomorrow if all goes well so today you’ll spend a good chunk of your day with HR but before that I’d like to show you to your office so you can get a sense of belonging.  Your office is on the 6th floor, you’ll soon figure out there is a method to our madness here in our circular building.”
“Do we have different departments on different floors?”
“OH no that would make sense.  I’m gonna give you a quiz on Friday to see if you’ve figured it out or not.  Its just one of those silly things we do.” Kal laughed and then pushed the button for the elevator.  “By the way you look really great today but just so you know we don’t have a dress code.  Its come as you are except like swim suits and pj’s.  Jeans up to business attire are all acceptable.”
“Do we want leadership to blend in or stand out?” I ask him.
“You know there’s not a set plan.  Normally I dress my best on Wed and Thursday. Monday’s are hard to deal with so they are normally jeans days.  But because I knew I was meeting you today I decided to forgo the jeans.”
“Ah thanks Kal but I like jeans. Don’t know if I’ll feel comfortable wearing them for while at work.”
“Not a problem just want you to know people here are a little more casual. We expect our employees to have infinite inspiration and feel that putting them in cages on what to wear and what to think inhibits that.”
“One of the reasons I chose this company to apply to.  I like the freedom and a strong focus on people.”
“Well here you’ll find that we believe that everyone comes to us with great ideas and an ability to contribute.  If they don’t show us that in a strong way they aren’t here long.  We have fun, we enjoy what we do and we want everyone to be on board.” Kal smiles and walks me up to my office, which is nothing more than an enlarged cubicle with a retractable door. My Cube-Office I find it cool and Kal apologizes that its not bigger.

“Kal no worries, honestly as long as I can get work done I’m ok.”

“Good,”  He smiled and motioned me to be able to put my things down just as a secretary pops her head around the corner, “Hello Serena, I’m Michelle, welcome to the company and these just arrived for you.” She hands me a huge bouquet of wild flowers. Taking them from her I smile and put them down.  Grabbing the card I smile even bigger.

Serena,
Wish I could be there to give you a big hug and kiss on your 1st day.
Enjoy and knock their socks off :)
Yours,
Jon

“Boyfriend?” Kal asks knowing from earlier conversations I’m not married.

“Well, not quite.  Someone that’s auditioning for the roll.” He smiled and we both walked out of my office/cubicle.  I had set down my coffee cup and stored my purse in the drawer.  Walking with Kal I look around to take in how people are dressed, how relaxed or strict the environment is, what people have on their desks to decorate to see if I can find the norm.

“Here we are, I’m going to leave you in Cheryl’s capable hands.  Jason and I would like you to join us for lunch today so we can get to know you better.  Sound good to you?” Kal asked.

“Sure what time are you thinking?”

“We’ll free you from paperwork around 1230.  Have fun and again Welcome to GroupON.”

I smile at him and go with Cheryl to get an ID and start on the 20 different forms I need to work on.
I know that Jason is Kal’s boss so around 1215 I ask Cheryl if I can run back to my office and get my purse before Kal comes back.  She’s shocked she kept me so long and tells me that’s not an issue.
What I had been doing all morning is valuable but not the most interesting. New hire paperwork and reading of policies.  Shockingly I find my cube and grab my purse. Inside I grab my phone and text Jon.

**Thx for the flowers sweetie, they really brightened my day.  Going to lunch with bosses will talk with you after work. - Yours, Serena**

I then shut my phone off and put it in my purse.

Lunch with Kal and Jason goes so well. We talk about my past jobs, my skill sets and even my weaknesses..  I enjoy the dialog because they dig in to the skills I posses and ask me which ones I want to keep using and which ones I don’t enjoy.  Its like they are truly trying to make the job as engaging to me as they can. Time will tell.

Back at the office, Kal tells me that the IT people should be to my office in about 20 minutes so if I’d like to just stay there and look through the GroupON processes manual. HR has already told me that because I’m salary there’s no time keeping I need to do just work an honest week.  Kal and Jason told me that while I can work from home whenever I want they just want to know when I’m doing it so when I get my email set up they’d like me to share my calendar with them and when I’m working at home to put WAH on my calendar and we’d be fine.  I ask them if they’d have a problem of me doing a half/half day from home to the office.  I found that to be very beneficial in my last job.  Still getting things done but also being able to be face to face in meetings.

“We have no issue with it, honestly you come and go as needed thats why we hired a professional.  That’s also why we want to see your calendar and Rich will too we will give you access to ours as well so you can see when we are in the offices. It makes life easier.”

“So I’m assuming I’ll have a VPN or a work laptop?”

“Both actually the techs today will give you everything including your cell phone.”

“Ok perfect then thanks for lunch.”

“No problem, if we don’t see you this afternoon then have a great night and I’ll let you know if Rich is going to be in tomorrow or not.”  Kal smiled.

I smile at both of them and go about my day. I spend the afternoon with IT getting all my accounts and access setup, having them walk me through some of the systems we use and the apps used on the phone.  By the end of the day I decide to leave my computer and flowers in my office and head to the train.  Getting into my condo I change into a pair of shorts and tank top grabbing my ipod I immediately go back downstairs to go for a run.   After running a mile from my house I turn and run the mile back and then shower and change before making dinner.
*hey beautiful are you back from work yet?*
Chapter 9

**disclaimer : GroupOn is used strictly for the a Chicago company - I have no affiliation with the company and I mean no harm - just using it fictionally **

After finding out what had happened to Jesse, Jon called me and we talked about that as well as how we could continue.  He explained that he wouldn’t be in Chicago often over the next few months since it was already October and the holidays were coming up but he’d like to stay in touch and date me again when he finally came back.

“You plan on coming back here?”

“Yes,  I wasn’t done with Chicago yet, on the philanthropy side and honestly, I’d like to see where this thing goes with you and I. If you can put everything on hold until my kid gets better. He’s going to need surgery and physical therapy and I need to be here for that.”

“Absolutely Jon. I’d think less of you if you left him there alone and came here.”

“I figured I’d like that about you. Ok darlin I’ll talk to you soon.” Jon smiles and hangs up.  And we do stay in touch.

Just when I think my life is going great I should know better. Change happens work wise about 4 months after getting hired.  The typical response from this company after someone has done the short fix - they lay them off.  So I get notified on Jan 2nd that I have until Feb 28th to find a new home, my position is being eliminated.  This doesn’t really shock me at all and even worse its kind of a blessing because finally I can put that whole time at EsT behind me once and for all.  I am told that I will have a severance of $75K when I leave, basically the rest of my years salary. To me, that seems perfect since I already got my mortgage refinanced so I didn’t have to deal with that. My payments are now $250 a month because I removed escrow and paid $20k off during the refi just to make it very controlled and to catch myself back up from the nightmare mortgage I was in.  That had depleted a good chunk of my savings but that’s ok too since the severance will replace that easily.  Helen so far has stayed at my place and had not went back to her moron so as of the end of December we set it up that she would pay $200 a month to me in rent.  Which left the WI house a big win for me.  There was no reason to try to sell it after all.

Brodan and Chris were horrified that I was laid off because I called it as the reason I didn’t trust them.  They were also a little shocked when I told them friend to friend that I wasn’t entirely unhappy by the situation.  Explaining to them that by still working in that role focusing on the IST I could never really let EsT go and it would be in my subconscious all the time.  This way I could really start over.  Of course I was told that I had their backing and support and they both sent me letters of recommendation within a week of finding out about the position.  Since I was being screwed here Chris told me to just work whenever the hell I wanted and if I needed a day to interview or whatever to not even bother to tell him because he felt like the company gave me the raw end of the deal.

Hugging them both I went about my day.  Jon was actually in Chicago for something and I had told him at dinner when he took me out.  He  immediately said he’d find me a job in NY or Jersey.  I told him I didn’t feel like working off the favor. He of course took it in stride and laughed, “Ok to make you feel better, just blow me or fuck me now and we’ll call it even.” I smack his arm and he holds me tight in a hug as we laugh.

I end up getting a job pretty easily with GroupOn as a Sr. Marketing Coordinator in the Business Retention group.   This job allows me to utilize the fact finding and research parts I love with the sales tools I know so well.  The salary I end up with after negotiation is still well above what I really need at $250k a year with four weeks of vacation.  I’m incredibly happy.  I even find the job at the beginning of February.  Chris tells me that I’ll still get my severance as long as I give a full two weeks.  I do and of course both Chris and Brodan meet me at the Sears tower office to collect my ID and computer. I hug them both, no hard feelings and walk away.
